Job Description
Each of the California State University 23 campuses operates a police department, whose police officers are sworn and certified by the California Commission on Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST). Each police/public safety department is charged with maintaining a safe campus environment by enforcing federal and state laws, CSU regulations, and the establishment of crime deterrence and prevention-related programs.
Reporting to the Chief of Police or designee, with additional lead work direction from other sworn administrator(s) or training academy staff, the Police Officer Cadet (Cadet) is a non-sworn individual who has not completed a Peace Officer Standards and Training (P.O.S.T.) academy or received a Basic Course Completion Certificate. Your primary responsibility is to attend the prescribed training. Upon successful completion of the training in the required time frame and the discretion of management, you’ll be appointed to the Police Officer classification in a probationary basis.
Your Key Responsibilities:
Attend prescribed police academy to learn principles, practices, and theory of criminal and civil law enforcement.
Receive training in report writing, physical fitness techniques, firearms use and maintenance, and arrest and control techniques.
Assist other police officers in performing duties under close supervision.
Your Collaborative Projects:
Engage in group training exercises and simulations to develop practical skills for law enforcement scenarios.
Work closely with academy instructors and fellow cadets to enhance learning and teamwork.
Your Outreach and Engagement:
Participate in community outreach events organized by the University and local law enforcement agencies.
Interact with diverse community members to foster positive relationships and promote safety awareness.
Your Resource Management:
Maintain equipment and facilities used during training sessions.
Adhere to departmental protocols for the proper handling and storage of firearms and related equipment.
Your Key Qualifications:
High school graduate, passed the GED or other high school equivalency test, or obtained a two-year, four-year, or advanced degree from an accredited or approved institution.
Eligibility to attend a certified California Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST) basic training academy.
Eligible to obtain a valid P.O.S.T. Certificate of Eligibility or possess a P.O.S.T. Basic Certificate in good standing.
Valid California driver’s license.
Must meet CSU Minimum Standards of Employment and Training, including passing a background investigation, physical agility test, and psychological exam.
Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
Your Pay, Benefits, & Work Schedule:
Salary/hire rate: $3,576 per month or $42,912 annually.
Full-time position with rotating shifts, including evenings and/or weekends.
Upon successful completion of required (POST) training within the specified timeframe, the Police Officer Cadet is appointed to the classification of police officer.
General Information:

Compliance with California Child Abuse and Neglect Reporting Act and CSU Executive Order 1083.
CSU-related work must be performed within California.
