Educational benefits

Specific fees are waived for up to two courses/six units (whichever is greater) per term at any CSU campus. The employee may transfer the fee waiver benefit to a spouse, registered domestic partner or eligible dependent child.

STABLE RETIREMENT

The California Public Employees Retirement System (CalPERS) is the defined benefit retirement system in which CSU participates. CalPERS is considered one of the biggest and most stable pension funds in the country. Our public safety officers are generally covered by the 2.5% at 57 program with five year vesting period for lifetime medical coverage for both you and your spouse. Based on your actual hire date and prior CalPERS membership, you may be covered under a different retirement formula.

GENEROUS TIME OFF

The CSU provides employees with a variety of paid and unpaid leave programs. Paid time off includes: 

  • 15 paid holidays per year
  • Approximately nine to 24 vacation days per year (based on years of service)
  • 12 sick days per year, with unlimited accrual
  • Up to 30 workdays of parental leave
  • Organ Donor leave for up to 30 continuous calendar days
  • Jury duty, regardless of the length of the jury service

LEGAL PLAN

The CSU offers a group legal plan to employees at an additional cost. It provides representation for many personal legal services for employees and their eligible dependents. Covered legal services performed by network attorneys are fully paid for by the plan. Newly appointed employees may enroll in the plan within 60 days of employment or during open enrollment.

Critical Illness Insurance

Group Critical Illness insurance provides a lump-sum payment to cover out-of-pocket medical expenses and costs associated with life changes, following the diagnosis of a covered critical illness (enrollment in a health insurance plan is required). Coverage is available for employees and their spouse or registered domestic partner and children at an additional cost to the employee. Newly appointed employees may enroll in the plan within 60 days of employment or during open enrollment.

 

Voluntary Retirement Savings Plans

Three voluntary retirement plan options, allowing employees to save toward retirement by contributing to tax-deferred investments and supplement their CalPERS Retirement Plan benefits.

Flexible Benefit Plans

Flexible benefit plans help employees save money by allowing them to pay for certain eligible expenses with pretax dollars. The tax savings help offset the impact of these expenses on disposable income.

Empathia Life Matters Employee Assistance Program (EAP)

Programs provide free, confidential counseling and referral services to eligible employees and members of their household—including dependents living away from home—24-hour access to confidential services that support emotional well-being, safety and productivity in the workplace.
